Crush calories with
heart-revving yoga

You contort into all kinds of wacky positions wriggling into those skinny jeans. Bend and twist on a regular basis and that might not be necessary. An active sequence of yoga flows — a form called vinyasa — burns more than 450 calories an hour, according to Sara Ivanhoe, host of 20 Minute Yoga Makeover: Weight Loss.
These two flows provide a total-body workout. Repeat each one enjoy yoga. As a twice back surgery patient, yoga strengthens and stretches my muscles. I don't count calories, wouldn't know where to start. I just enjoy myself. That is the key.

Sweating
does not equal calories burnt. I can sit in a sauna an d burn calories.
I am Indian and have practiced yoga since I was young. I think it is good for strength and flexibility and mental health. I would like independent sources for how many calories you burn in the average yoga class.

Yoga
does burn calories, try holding a position and see how fast you start sweating.
People are just being ridiculous. These moves are really easy but will get you
sweating.
i'm
very new to yoga. is there a specific amount of time this total workout should
take or is it that dependent on the individual?
I
wear my Polar HRM occasionally during my yoga classes-- it measures my calories
burned. For 1 1/2 hours of ashtanga, I burn 375-500, usually just above 400.
For 1 hour of gentle hatha, about 130. 1 hour Iyengar, 200. For me, anyway,
Ashtanga is about the same in calorie burn as easy-to-medium cardio workout--
weight & elliptical intervals, uphill hiking, or jogging.
Those
who don't think any form of yoga doesn't burn any calories, hasn't done it. I'm
a yoga teacher, who teaches a slower-paced, traditional style class (not a
vinyasa or hot yoga class, which REALLY burns calories), but we still do sun
salutations at the beginning of each class. Sun salutations done correctly make
you sweat and definitely increase your heart rate. The poses suggested here,
done with the breath, are in most forms of sun salutations, and most definitely
can lead to weight loss. Other ways yoga leads to weight loss is by making the
student more in touch with his/her own body and relieves stress greatly. Yoga Alliance, at
yogaalliance.org, has a pdf sheet that details the way yoga helps a person lose
weight. You have to search the site for the sheet, but it is there, along with
other tips and benefits of yoga.
I
really can't believe that any form of yoga burns that many calories. I think
that Yoga is great for flexibility and mental health.
I think I would feel better if those values could be independently verified.

Why
Can't I print or save the workout??? I keep getting the Sony Walkman
advertisement!!! UGH
The
first flow is 1 - 3 and because you have to stop the flow and get onto all
fours, the second flow is 4-6....that's what i think!
it
says there are 2 flows but I only see one (from backbend to cobra). Am I missing
something??
I
went back to practicing yoga after a long time of hardly any exercise, and all
6 of these moves are part of the routine in my yoga class. It was challenging
at first, but once you surrender to the pose and breath deep it's really
liberating. Just remember to keep breathing.
I am
really excited to try this. Have you all had good results? If so, what kind?
I
love these poses! I do this routine every night before bed and I sleep so much
better.
Yoga
Virgin,
Hold each pose 5 - 6 breaths to start. As you repeat the sequence, cut down to 2 to 3, but whatever feels right. If you keep moving, it helps elevate the heart rate. But if you hold each one more, it can really tone... depending on the position. Focus on the breath through the nose only. Enjoy!

Love
this workout. I am new to yoga and this was a great routine to start with. I
couldn't get enough and did it 8 times the first day.
I've
just started doing this workout, and after 2-3 days, I feel better in general,
and as the days pass, i can do half the moves better than when i started. also,
i started craving more [5-10 wasn't enough to feel some burn], so i'm starting
to add some crunches and other stuff i stopped doing a while back.
Any
good poses i could add to this workout?
This
is great because this is something I can remember and incorporate in my
lunchtime destress routine.
hi i
really need to lose weight in teh next 2 months for a big wedding..will this
help me>
I'm
needing a total body tone, so I was told yoga was the way to go.. so I'm going
to try this after work... :-)
usually
in class you hold downward dog for 5 breaths (in and out is one) and really for
vinyasa the entire sequence should be done as one movement with the breathes
carrying you to each move. for example if you do chataranga from move 5 to 6
(meaning you lower your body down in a pushup pose withOUT letting your thighs
touch the flr) you would exhale on the way down and then inhale as you moved
into move 6
Ok,
I guess maybe I need Yoga for dummies or something. How long are you supposed
to hold each pose? Signed, Yoga Virgin
I
just started vinyasa yoga as well. I love it! It is intense but yet very
relaxing. When you finish you feel GREAT! It is a must try!
I
